"A literary memoir highlighting many of the most commonly encountered obstacles and trials in the "coming out" for a male to female transgender woman. Included are chapters on repression, coming out to friends and family, psychotherapy, hormone replacement therapy, laser hair removal, passability. coming out at work, the legal name and gender marker change, and voice training.
Also included are excerpts of other real-life events which occurred during the process, involving self-harm, suicide, and familial and societal rejection. Written in a compelling, intriguing, and informative manner."
"In this book the author, Trystlynn Barber, covers her pre-op transition. It begins with a keen analogy about being locked in a room and raised by loving care takers, but showing some severe fraying as the child receives no emotional support, just food and shelter. She felt like that person, repressing her gender identity feelings, like the caged person in the story, including severe acts of self-harm. She covers some of her pre-transition life early in the book. Then, she covers all the steps in her transition in chronological order. Beginning with coming out to wife and children and a few close friends. Next is her contact with a therapist, followed by the beginning of hormone replacement treatment (HRT)."
"She then went through the laser hair removal procedure, primarily for her face. She next covers “passing” and her route to being able to pass by wig, makeup, and clothes. After this she delves into dealing with the public at large. Following this is her transition at work, having to work through multiple issues, including which bathrooms she could use. She then described how she went about changing her name. Closely connected to this she relates changing her gender marker. Finally, she covers voice feminization training. There is an epilogue, which indicates there will be a second book dealing with surgical transitioning. It all also has her experience with male-to-female PMS and her plans to relocate."
