Original title: "Da Karl blev Karla: En dansk læges bedrift" (When Karl became Karla: A Danish doctor's achievement) by Bent Rosenwein.
The book deals with gender reassignment surgery, which according to the book was performed on a young American man, Karl, who had traveled to Copenhagen to undergo gender reassignment surgery.
The book only deals peripherally with the gender reassignment surgery that Christine Jorgensen had undergone at Rigshospitalet. Shortly after Christine Jorgensen had her gender reassignment surgery, the Danish Parliament decided that in the future only Danish citizens could have such surgery in Denmark.
The book shows that Karl got in touch with a Danish doctor, Dr. Petersen, who was willing to perform the gender reassignment surgery on him as an act of humiliation. Since the operation due to the Danish rule could not be done officially and thus not in a hospital, the doctor performed the operation on the kitchen table in his apartment. His wife and eldest son assisted in the operation.
According to the book, the operation was extremely successful.
On February 24 and 25, 1954, Aftenbladet published articles about a young American Charles McLeod, who underwent sex reassignment surgery in Copenhagen and then took the name Charlotte McLeod.
