"This is a searing account of the author's physical, spiritual and emotional journey from man to woman. Josie has lived and loved as a man and as a woman. This is the story of her voyage from his days working in desert mining and construction camps through to the struggles with her family and eventual reconciliation with her dying mother.
It is the story of his loves and his marriage as a man, of fatherhood, and his passage through the barriers of gender and sex. The story of the shock of discovering her need - as a woman - to be with a man. An account, as well, of personal spiritual discovery, The Real Possibility of Joy opens up the mystery of what it means to be human and captures the joy of living one's own, hard-won, personal truth."
In 2013, I interviewed Josephine and asked her about her transition experiences: "This is all documented in ‘The Real Possibility...” I finally accepted the reality of my gender after my father died. I was about 56. I was in total turmoil. I was living on pills and booze and trying to hold down the job as Head of a teaching department at a Film School. I was already divorced, and my second partner left me. I was alone. No support. It was very difficult. I took a new job, as Director of a government arts strategy unit and I finally came out there. My change had no obvious effect on my job."
Josephine Emery is a screenwriter and author from Australia who lived for nearly 60 years as John Emery. From a young age, she felt that she was a woman inside. After years of hormone treatment and painful surgery, she transitioned to live as a woman. She has written a book about her journey, "The Real Possibility of Joy". Her story is a testament to her courage and determination in embracing her true identity. She continues to inspire many with her transgender journey of discovery, confrontation, celebration, and joy.
