A random collection of over 1910 books and audiobooks authored by or about my transgender, intersex sisters, and gender-nonconforming persons all over the world. I read some of them, and I was inspired by some of them. I met some of the authors and heroines, some of them are my best friends, and I had the pleasure and honor of interviewing some of them. If you know of any transgender biography that I have not covered yet, please let me know.

Original title: "Trans*" by ÉPICÈNE.

The book Trans, published in 2020 by ÉPICÈNE, is a remarkable and deeply thoughtful project that seeks to deconstruct the pervasive stereotypes surrounding transgender individuals while highlighting their humanity and diversity. Through forty-six carefully curated portraits, the book presents a multifaceted view of transgender life in Switzerland, offering readers both a visual and narrative experience that is rare in its depth and authenticity.

Each portrait combines a photograph by the talented photographer Noura Gauper with an in-depth interview conducted in one of Switzerland’s three main national languages by a professional journalist. The work includes twenty-three women and twenty-three men, representing a broad geographic and cultural spectrum with twenty participants from Swiss Romandy, twenty from the German-speaking regions, and six from Ticino, reflecting the rich diversity within the country. The primary objective of Trans is to challenge discrimination and social exclusion, issues that continue to affect transgender individuals disproportionately. Studies have shown that the suicide rate among trans* people is ten times higher than that of the cisgender population, and unemployment rates are six times greater, revealing systemic barriers that hinder full societal integration.

The book counters these narratives by showcasing transgender people who, when allowed to live authentically, are not only fully integrated into society but also lead lives marked by resilience, ambition, and ordinary joys, emphasizing that their experiences are not fundamentally different from anyone else’s. What makes Trans especially compelling is the thoughtful and careful approach to its creation. Over more than two years of dedicated work, the project brought together journalists, photographers, and participants in a collaborative effort to capture authentic experiences without sensationalizing or reducing them to stereotypes. The photographs are intimate and sincere, capturing the essence of each individual with a balance of artistry and realism, while the interviews provide personal insights into identity, challenges, aspirations, and the daily realities of being transgender in contemporary Switzerland.

These stories collectively offer a powerful counter-narrative to misunderstanding and prejudice, presenting trans* individuals as complete, complex human beings rather than one-dimensional subjects. The book also serves a social purpose beyond storytelling. Purchasing a copy of Trans provides direct support to the transgender community in two meaningful ways. First, it educates and raises awareness among readers, fostering understanding, empathy, and acceptance. Second, the proceeds from the book go toward assisting the most disadvantaged transgender individuals, helping address the material and social inequities that affect so many in the community.

In this way, "Trans*" is not only a literary and artistic achievement but also a tool for social impact and advocacy. The quality of the book itself reflects the care and attention devoted to every aspect of its production. From its visually appealing layout to the tactile experience of the pages, the book combines form and content in a way that enhances its message. Readers are treated to enriching testimonials and compelling personal narratives accompanied by stunning, authentic photography that captures the individuality and spirit of each subject. It is a work that resonates both intellectually and emotionally, encouraging reflection on societal norms, empathy for lived experiences different from one’s own, and recognition of the shared humanity that connects all people.

In the broader context of literature about transgender lives, "Trans*" stands out for its thoughtful structure, ethical approach, and holistic portrayal of a diverse community. It is not merely a collection of stories or images, but a carefully crafted document that embodies advocacy, education, and artistry. It honors the courage of those who shared their experiences while inviting readers to reconsider assumptions and deepen their understanding of gender, identity, and the social forces that shape daily life. Gratitude is due to all the participants, journalists, and collaborators whose work made this project possible, resulting in a book that is both powerful and beautiful, informative and deeply human. Trans is a significant contribution to contemporary literature and social discourse, offering both inspiration and hope while demonstrating the importance of visibility, acceptance, and solidarity for transgender people everywhere.
