Original title: "Atrevidas: relatos polifónicos de mujeres trans" (Daring: Polyphonic Stories of Trans Women) by Camila Schumacher.
"In 2013, Camila Schumacher was offered a job as a communicator at the II Central American Meeting of Women in the Performing Arts, where she met Dayana Hernández, current president of the TransVida Foundation, a Costa Rican organization created in 2009, by and for trans people. with the purpose of working for the human rights and identity of trans women; the search for attention and opportunities in health and education for this sector, as well as access and decent conditions for their work.
Hernández was in charge of showing Schumacher the reality that many trans women suffer today, and how the lack of education makes them use the street to survive. Months later, together, both started the project "From the Street To the Classrooms", an initiative that proposed the opening of an educational space for the trans community that, for multiple reasons, had not completed the levels equivalent to primary and secondary school, so Schumacher, being a teacher, offered his knowledge so that the women of the foundation could obtain a degree and thus be able to get ahead.
In 2018, after four years at TransVida, the writer left her position, and it was at that time that the idea of making a book related to the community of trans women came to light and so it was that, after conducting multiple interviews with the women of TransVida, Schumacher managed to bring to life the 30 stories that make up the book "Atrevidas"."
"Camila Schumacher is a Costa Rican writer, born in Argentina, who was always very influenced by literature, from a very early age. That closeness to books, as well as her facility for creating stories, have made her the author of several literary works, in different genres. In 2019, she published the book "Atrevidas: Relatos polifónicos de mujeres trans", a work that embodies, through 30 stories, what different Costa Rican trans women live today. Thanks to this work, Schumacher received the 2019 Aquileo J. Echeverría National Prize for Literature, in the category of Short Story. This award is part of the National Culture Awards awarded annually by the Ministry of Culture and Youth."
