A random collection of over 1994 books and audiobooks authored by or about my transgender, intersex sisters, and gender-nonconforming persons all over the world. I read some of them, and I was inspired by some of them. I met some of the authors and heroines, some of them are my best friends, and I had the pleasure and honor of interviewing some of them. If you know of any transgender biography that I have not covered yet, please let me know.

Yvie Oddly - All About Yvie: Into the Oddity

Full title: "All About Yvie: Into the Oddity" by Yvie Oddly and Michael Bach.

All About Yvie: Into the Oddity, co-written by Yvie Oddly and Michael Bach, is a deeply personal exploration of the life of one of the world’s most unconventional and celebrated drag artists. The memoir traces Yvie’s journey from childhood to international stardom, offering readers an unflinching look at the challenges and triumphs that shaped their identity, artistry, and relationships. Born Jovan Jordan Bridges on August 22, 1993, in Denver, Colorado, Yvie’s early years were marked by a fascination with makeup and dress-up, often in defiance of traditional gender expectations.

Even as a six-year-old, Bridges expressed joy and comfort in skirts and makeup, a preference that would later evolve into the signature drag persona the world now knows. Gymnastics and other physically demanding activities were a part of their youth until a diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome at fifteen prompted a shift toward musical theatre, providing an alternative avenue for physical expression and performance. Yvie’s first encounter with drag came in middle school through the theatrical creativity of a classmate, inspiring their own playful exploration of costuming, attention, and performance. Their formative years included attending East High School and later the Auraria Campus in Denver, both of which contributed to the foundation of their artistry and understanding of self.

Yvie Oddly’s career began in the local drag scene as Avon Eve at the Center in Denver, eventually performing at Broadways Bar under the mentorship of Mile High Pinky Pie. Their commitment to drag crystallized in 2012 after watching Sharon Needles on the fourth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, appreciating the way Needles embraced art, humor, and unconventional beauty over traditional glamour. The first serious attempts at drag occurred during college, where Yvie experimented with inexpensive costumes and elaborate choreography, signaling the start of a distinctive performance style that would gain them renown. The name Yvie Oddly reflects a deliberate embrace of oddity, a celebration of being uniquely creative and expressive. Early recognition included winning the Ultimate Queen of Denver pageant in 2015, joining Drag Nation, opening for Mya at PrideFest, and participating in theatrical productions. Through the years, Yvie developed a drag aesthetic that deliberately shocked and delighted audiences, often using found materials to create high-impact looks, demonstrating both resourcefulness and a fearless approach to art.

The memoir offers an intimate perspective on Yvie’s transformative experience on RuPaul’s Drag Race season eleven, where they quickly became a fan and judge favorite thanks to eccentric and conceptual fashion choices, dynamic performances, and an engaging, outspoken personality. Despite physical challenges related to hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, including joint instability and chronic pain, Yvie’s performances were marked by precision, daring choreography, and a fearless embrace of theatrical risk. Their time on the show included memorable rivalries, particularly with Silky Nutmeg Ganache, and moments of triumph such as consistently placing in the top of challenges, showcasing versatility and creativity. The finale cemented Yvie Oddly as the season winner, a historic moment that challenged mainstream notions of drag and celebrated artistry over conventional glamour. Their victory is notable not only for personal achievement but also for highlighting the contributions of queer people of color to drag culture, emphasizing the intersection of race, gender, and performance in shaping contemporary queer artistry.

Following Drag Race, Yvie Oddly’s career expanded globally through the Werq the World tour, performing across North America, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, and through media projects including the Oddities series on WOW Presents Plus, which showcases their inventive approach to transforming thrift store finds into wearable art. The memoir also documents the practical realities of navigating a drag career, from financial pressures to the physical limitations imposed by hEDS, highlighting the dedication required to sustain artistry while maintaining personal wellbeing. Yvie’s narrative demonstrates an ongoing negotiation between private identity and public persona, revealing the emotional labor behind performances that appear effortless. The book explores relationships with family, friends, and collaborators, providing insight into the support systems and tensions that influence both personal and professional growth.

All About Yvie: Into the Oddity is also a celebration of drag as a multifaceted art form. Yvie articulates the transformative power of drag, presenting it as a medium for self-expression, social commentary, and radical creativity. The memoir portrays Yvie’s evolution into a genderqueer artist who navigates the complexities of fame, identity, and artistry with humor, vulnerability, and authenticity. Readers are invited to witness the highs and lows of Yvie’s journey, from early experimentation with makeup and performance to international recognition as a Drag Race winner, musician, and fashion innovator. By sharing their experiences candidly, Yvie Oddly encourages readers to embrace their own oddities and explore the ways in which identity and creativity intersect. The book’s intimate storytelling, combined with a celebration of individuality, ensures that All About Yvie: Into the Oddity resonates not only with drag fans but with anyone seeking inspiration from a life lived boldly, honestly, and without compromise. It captures the essence of an artist who defies expectations, challenges conventions, and ultimately redefines what it means to perform, to create, and to exist authentically in the world.
