"A product of the mid-century fascination with gender-reassignment surgery, “I Was Male!” chronicles the story of exotic dancer model Abby Sinclair. The story originally ran as a serial in The National Insider, a 1960s tabloid magazine, eventually picked up by Novel Books, Inc. and published as a pulp-esque tell-all. Included are accounts of the author’s journey through her medical transition, and details of her personal life. Sinclair’s story, along with the accompanying chapters, contain equal parts intrigue and skepticism.
The book concludes with a chapter titled “I Want to be Male Again!” by Latina Seville, revealing that despite increasingly liberal attitudes towards sex and gender bubbling to the surface in the 1960s, there was still much scorn relegated to trans individuals. Also includes a section “A Comprehensive Analysis of the Sex-Change Phenomenon” by George Griffith and Carlson Wade."
