A random collection of over 1994 books and audiobooks authored by or about my transgender, intersex sisters, and gender-nonconforming persons all over the world. I read some of them, and I was inspired by some of them. I met some of the authors and heroines, some of them are my best friends, and I had the pleasure and honor of interviewing some of them. If you know of any transgender biography that I have not covered yet, please let me know.

Original title: "Opowieści różnej treści: Osiemnaście miesięcy z życia Lukrecji" (Stories of different content. Eighteen months from the life of Lucrezia) by Lukrecja Kowalska.

The book Opowieści różnej treści: Osiemnaście miesięcy z życia Lukrecji, written by Lukrecja Kowalska, is a richly illustrated collection of stories that continues the life journey of the protagonist introduced in her earlier autobiography Lukrecja w ciele Krzyśka. The volume spans eighteen months of Lukrecja’s life, offering a deeply personal and intimate look at her daily experiences, reflecting the spectrum of emotions and situations that shape her world. Each story presents a snapshot of ordinary life, yet through Lukrecja’s perspective, the mundane becomes infused with insight, humor, and a subtle poignancy that resonates with readers familiar with the challenges and triumphs of living authentically. The book does more than recount events; it immerses the reader in the nuances of her journey, capturing the inner conflicts, small victories, and ongoing self-discovery of a transgender woman navigating her identity in a world often unprepared for difference.

Lukrecja Kowalska herself is a transgender woman undergoing gender-affirming treatment. She first gained public recognition as Miss Trans 2012 and has shared her transition experiences extensively in press articles and online platforms. Her life story includes being one of the figures in the series W obcym ciele, making her personal narrative visible to a wider audience. Her literary debut appeared in a compilation edited by Anna Kłonkowska, titled O płci od nowa, and since then she has published several works, including Lukrecja w ciele Krzyśka and Dwa opowiadania, with part of the proceeds supporting animals in need. Beyond writing, she has been an active advocate for the transgender community, running a support group in Poznań and volunteering with the Trans-Fuzja Foundation. Her life story is a testament to perseverance, patience, and the pursuit of authenticity, shaped by decades of self-reflection and gradual revelation of her true self.

Her early awareness of her gender identity emerged in childhood, expressed through innocent acts of dressing in her mother’s clothing, which she did not perceive as fetishistic but rather as an expression of an inner need. Caught by her mother, she concealed these impulses for many years, only to rediscover them in adulthood after marriage and the birth of a child. Her journey back to self-recognition intensified around 2011, when she found herself immersed in the community of transgender people and drag performers in Poznań. This environment offered both representation and dialogue, affirming that she was not alone and prompting her to explore her identity more openly. Lukrecja reflects on her life with clarity, acknowledging years of solitude and the sense of being fundamentally different from her peers, a realization that shaped her early emotional experiences and her attachment to her younger sister as a focus of her feminine care and love. The narrative she presents is one of gradual awakening and the courage to live truthfully despite societal pressures.

A key turning point for her was over twenty years ago during her own wedding, where she encountered another individual who had undergone gender-affirming procedures. While the opportunity for dialogue existed, she recognized that acting on it would have destroyed her marriage, a decision that underscores the tension between authenticity and social constraints that has pervaded her life. Years later, she faced a renewed confrontation with her identity as she sought the guidance of professionals and the support of the Trans-Fuzja Foundation. This period of reflection and counsel led to a decisive acceptance of herself as a woman, the abandonment of self-denial, and the pursuit of medical interventions to align her physical reality with her inner identity.

The social repercussions of living openly have been varied. Lukrecja faced workplace discrimination in Germany, where she was dismissed despite qualifications and professional competence, highlighting the systemic challenges transgender individuals often encounter. Back in her hometown of Chodzież, she experiences greater understanding and respect, indicating that acceptance is not uniform but can grow through exposure and education. Family dynamics remain complex; her former spouse chose a life separate from hers, her son offers cautious acknowledgment rather than overt support, and her father has largely withdrawn, while her relationship with her sister has evolved into one of full acceptance and mutual respect.

These relational layers enrich the narrative of her book, providing context for the emotional texture of her everyday life. She recounts moments of social discomfort, such as navigating bureaucratic interactions or using public facilities, which underscore the continuing challenges faced by transgender people even as legal and cultural frameworks evolve. The passage of supportive legislation, such as laws facilitating gender recognition, is significant for her, as it simplifies bureaucratic hurdles and signals societal acknowledgment, which can lead to wider visibility and normalization for transgender communities.

Through Opowieści różnej treści, readers gain an intimate portrait of Lukrecja Kowalska as she negotiates the intersections of identity, love, family, and societal expectation. The collection portrays the mundane and extraordinary with equal attention, reflecting the persistence of a woman committed to living authentically while navigating the complexities of acceptance and personal growth. The book not only chronicles specific events but captures the ongoing emotional landscape of someone living fully in accordance with her truth, making it a compelling contribution to contemporary literature on transgender experience and human resilience. It is a work that encourages empathy, understanding, and reflection, presenting both the challenges and the subtle joys of a life lived openly and unapologetically.
