Full title: "It Gets Better . . . Except When It Gets Worse: And Other Unsolicited Truths I Wish Someone Had Told Me" by Nicole Maines.
"Nicole Maines knows a little something about “happily ever after”—not just because she’s a self-professed expert in the Disney princess canon, but because she’s lived it. After coming out at an early age, her family had not only to educate themselves, but also those around them as they fought and won a landmark court case in the state of Maine before she graduated high school. She made it into college, got the guy, and finally had The Surgery.
She achieved her lifelong goal of becoming an actress when she landed a major role in the CW’s Supergirl, playing television’s very first live-action transgender superhero. Cue sappy music and sunsets, because we’ve got ourselves a happy ending, right? Ha! As if. For the first time, in her own words, Nicole tells the story of her journey from childhood in rural Maine to the spotlights of Hollywood, sharing the lessons she’s learned along the way. With clever wit and unflinching honesty, she tackles some of the most insidious messaging absorbed by queer kids and all young women, from the idea that any one thing can (or should) ever really “fix” you, to wondering what’s wrong with you when things don’t always feel better, and reminding us that, sometimes, a happy ending is only the beginning of the story."
"Nicole Maines is an actress and writer making her mark in film and television, and as a socially engaged activist, she is paving the way for LGBTQ+ youth on and off screen. Maines has been nominated for a GLAAD Media Award and was a VARIETY “Power of Young Hollywood” and VARIETY “Power of Pride” honoree. For her activism, Maines was a 2020 Human Rights Campaign “Upstander Award” honoree and continues to be a tireless champion for trans rights. Upcoming, Maines will release her highly anticipated memoir, IT GETS BETTER…EXCEPT WHEN IT GETS WORSE: And Other Unsolicited Truths I Wish Someone Had Told Me, which will be published by The Dial Press, an imprint of Penguin Random House, on October 15, 2024.
Maines was most recently seen in the Showtime hit series, YELLOWJACKETS, opposite Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, and Juliette Lewis. She portrayed ‘Lisa,’ an associate of ‘Lottie’s’ who is trying to recover from past trauma. Last year, Maines reprised her breakout role as “Nia Nal” aka “Dreamer” during The CW’s THE FLASH’s ninth season. In 2018, Maines made history through her portrayal of the same character on The CW’s beloved series SUPERGIRL, making her TV's first-ever transgender superhero.
On the film side, Maines starred in DARBY AND THE DEAD, the 20th Century Studios film directed by Silas Howard, which premiered exclusively on Hulu in December 2022. Maines portrayed “Piper” in the film, which follows a teenager who is granted the ability to see ghosts after suffering a near death experience in her childhood. Her additional writing credits include her DREAMER’S comic book debut in DC’s 2021 Pride anthology, as well as numerous comics for DC including SUPERMAN: SON OF KAL EL #13 with Tom Taylor, LAZARUS PLANET ASSAULT ON KRYPTON #1, and HALREY QUINN: EVERYBODY HATES SIDEQUESTS.
In April 2024, DC published Maines’s full length graphic novel BAD DREAM: A DREAMER STORY, which details the character of “Nia’s” comic book origins. Maines is open in sharing her journey of being transgender with the world. She, with the help of Amy Ellis Nutt, released the book Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family. The book quickly became a New York Times bestseller. Her additional credits include Freeform’s critically acclaimed series GOOD TROUBLE, and the lead role of BIT, a movie about a transgender teen who visits Los Angeles and gets bitten by a vampire. Maines lives in Los Angeles with her two cats, Noodle and Minthara."
