María Toscano-Alonso - Transformando la televisión

Original title: "Transformando la televisión: Representaciones en series que revolucionan la hegemonía cis" (Transforming Television: Representations in Series That Revolutionize Cis Hegemony) by María Toscano-Alonso.

Trans identities have been silenced and made invisible for years, having been scarcely represented in mass culture, and when they have appeared it has been under negative stereotypes. In the last decade, new representations have begun to proliferate in television series and digital platforms that have given space to diverse trans-identity realities, from a trans woman imprisoned in prison, in Orange Is The New Black, to a trans man in the middle of the Spanish Civil War, in Las chicas del cable.

Christoph Imhof - Living the Opposite Sex

Full title: "Living the Opposite Sex: Trans Journeys in Southern Spain" by Christoph Imhof.

"Studying the life situations of trans persons reveals preceding and ongoing political, societal and cultural transformations. This ethnographic study concerns individuals in Andalusia, Southern Spain, who do not fit the sex and gender assigned to them at birth. Christoph Imhof thus investigates issues leading back to the repressive situation during the dictatorship of Franco and to contemporary endeavours and achievements regarding acceptance, citizenship and self-determination.

He highlights the pioneering role that Andalusia has played within Spain regarding trans issues since the late 1990s and shows how trans persons in Southern Spain have experienced the growing social, medical and legal acceptance of their gender non-conformity."

Fernanda Resteles - AINDA HÁ UMA CHANCE

Original title: "AINDA HÁ UMA CHANCE: Relatos de uma mulher transexuall" (THERE'S STILL A CHANCE: Reports of a transgender woman) by Fernanda Resteles.

"Discover the story of Fernanda Resteles narrated by herself in the 57 chapters of this book. She does not spare the reader knowing every detail of her life, both on the streets and in the privacy of her home. In these pages you will understand how a transsexual woman struggles when she is abandoned by those who should protect her the most: her family.

Fernanda recounts her entire trajectory since the age of 13, when she had to leave home to avoid suffering more abuse simply because she assumed her transsexual condition. She entered prostitution to not die of hunger, survived on the streets, was almost murdered several times, took refuge in drugs, made good friends but also enemies and had to flee Rio de Janeiro because of a crime she did not commit. The author constructed her narrative in such a way that not only the dramatic parts of her life were visualized, but also the funny and amusing ones. The book is easy to read and fluid and is a great example that the battles of this life can be won by people of determination, strength, and faith."

Julia Serano - Sexed Up: How Society Sexualizes Us

Full title: "Sexed Up: How Society Sexualizes Us, and How We Can Fight Back" by Julia Serano.

"The author of landmark manifesto Whipping Girl exposes the violent ways we are all sexualized–then offers a bold path for resistance. Feminists have long challenged the ways in which men tend to sexualize women. But pioneering activist, biologist, and trans woman Julia Serano argues that sexualization is a far more pervasive problem, as it’s something that we all do to other people, often without being aware of it. Why do we perceive men as sexual predators and women as sexual objects?

Why are LGBTQ+ people stereotyped as being sexually indiscriminate and deceptive? Why are people of color still being hypersexualized? These stereotypes push minorities farther into the margins, and even the privileged are policed from transgressing, lest they also become targets. Many view sexualization as a mere component of sexism, racism, or queerphobia, but Serano argues that liberation from sexual violence comes through collectively confronting sexualization itself."

Paola Catanzaro - Essere o apparire

Original title: "Essere o apparire. Nascondersi è un po' morire" (To be or to appear. Hiding is a bit dying) by Paola Catanzaro.

"When duality dwells in us, there is always a predominant part. In me surely the strongest part was the female one, despite my body being male. Those who have divided the human race into two genders have not taken into account that in nature there is always the exception.

So how to overcome preconceptions, phobia, and differences? I wrote this book to tell the true story of a "woman by choice". My life, my pains, my battles. The wounds inflicted for no reason, healed and made me stronger. The tears dried up new horizons for me. Hiding is useless, hiding is like dying."

Barbara Gibson - Streetlife: Male and trans sex workers...

Full title: "Streetlife: Male and trans sex workers' voices from the AIDS era" by Barbara Gibson.

"A searingly honest depiction of life lived on the margins; of street life, sex work, and survival during the AIDS era. Streetlife presents a collection of interviews, recorded by the author, with four men and two trans women she met in the course of her work during the 1980s and early 1990s.

They are voices from the very edges of society; though their stories take us from the 'cardboard city' to parties with the rich and famous, taking in drugs, clubs, glamour, violence, money, brothels, safe and unsafe sex, and the fear of HIV. These stories are told in the words of those who lived them, with in-depth descriptions of how they navigated diverse journeys to define and express their sexuality and transgender identities."

Katie Louise Miller - Night and Day

Full title: "Night and Day" by Katie Louise Miller.

"Many of us do not know what we want out of life until the onset of adulthood when we strive for careers, material wealth, and the trappings of everyday life. Yet at the tender age of six, Katie Miller knew precisely the path she wanted to take, even if it meant challenging societal norms. Unfortunately, she had no idea that life's idiosyncrasies and unexpected challenges would throw everything into turmoil from that point forward. In a candid retelling of her journey through gender dysphoria and a decision that changed her life forever,

Katie discloses the trials and tribulations, the extreme highs and lows, the hurdles she encountered, the moments she marveled at, the choices she made or did not make, and the subsequent consequences as she walked down an often obstacle-lined path to realise her true identity. She opens her heart and shares her experiences and insights as a transgender woman in order to help anyone struggling to better understand their own emotions or experiences and ultimately become the person they want and need to be. Night and Day is the story of a transgender woman's journey of transition as she sought to live a life without regret and accept her true self."

Selina Stone - Confessions of a Crossdressing Exhibitionist...

Full title: "Confessions of a Crossdressing Exhibitionist a Few Years On" by Selina Stone.

"This is the second installment of my experiences as a crossdressing exhibitionist. I wanted to put more of my actual personality in this book that I did in the last one. Here, I dive deeper into how pervasive dressing up and doing shows has been in my life. How I love it, yet hate loving it. How just getting dressed changes my whole character. How an otherwise totally straight -now married- guy literally transforms, adopting a character that is entirely female - but keeps that entire life online and semi-secret. It wouldn't be such a terrible thing had it not been for the desires to perform shows on cam sites and in chat rooms.

On the less psychological but on more of a confession side, I talk about some of the memorable shows I've done, the people I've talked to, the women I get in my room and detail how I feel, my desires and thoughts throughout my shows. Crossdressers will be able to relate to many of my feelings. Exhibitionists will be able to relate even more. Others might hopefully find the mental aspects interesting and parts quite sexy. I have included photographs, nothing explicit though."

Panat Srinuan - Kathey xīs̄ān

Original title: "กะเทยอีสาน" Kathey xīs̄ān (Journal of Transgender Isaan) by Panat Srinuan (เต้ย – ปณต ศรีนวล).

We often hear the myth that Thailand is a paradise for LGBTQ people. Past incidents of sexual violence and testimonials from the community indicate that the above sentence is a huge exaggeration as shown in this book.

The founder and editor of GendersMatter, as well as the author of this book, wrote this book to expose transgender lives in places where economic mobility is low. This book tells about the lives of transgender women in Sisaket province, one of the poorest provinces in Thailand.

Adrian Barnes - My Knight's Quest

Full title: "My Knight's Quest: The story of a transwoman’s search to find a space for herself and a place where she could exist" by Adrian Barnes.

"Few of us consider that our life is particularly interesting or unusual. We can recall some brief highlights over the years with a smile, but often our lives are cluttered with moments we would rather not remember. I was no different in this respect, though perhaps I had more clutter than many. The events that could make up my life story, such as my career and family life, were clearly of little interest to anyone.

My past was captured in photograph albums and travel diaries, all hidden away in cupboards. There was one aspect of my life that I would have preferred to remain buried, and that was my long quest to create a space for myself as a woman. Those memories might have remained comfortably hidden had it not been for one man who was determined to dig them up. This autobiography tells the story of an Australian transwoman’s search to find a space for herself in the world; a place where she could truly exist. It is a story of how her life went from being secretive and unknown to being accepted and understood."

Cami Richardson - Foggy Googles

Full title: "Foggy Googles: A sequel memoir to 'Do you know who I once was'" by Cami Richardson.

"Foggy Googles is a sequel memoir to my first book called 'Do you know who I once was.' In my discussions with my editor on the first book, she suggested I leave out many of my stories and memories about my firehouse years, my amazing wife Teri, my ski career and entrepreneurial years and try to focus the book on my transition to that of being a transgender woman. I agreed and I believe that first book helped me move forward in reaching my personal mission goal of educating and enlightening others about the transgender community. After publishing it and in allowing some friends and family to read some chapters that were left out, the common response I received was that I should publish them and include them in a sequel, so “Foggy Googles” became a reality."
